2023, NeuroscienceCitation Excerpt :In this review, we will comment on the ability of tau protein to aggregate into small or large polymers (forming different structures) (Avila et al., 2016; Goedert and Spillantini, 2019). Human tau protein is expressed by a single gene located at chromosome 17 (Neve et al., 1986). The transcription of this gene in the central nervous system (CNS) leads to the appearance of a nuclear RNA that, upon alternative splicing and after translation, yields six distinct alternative tau isoforms (Liu and Gong, 2008).
