This mechanism has been suggested based on the observation of rapid onset and reversal of inhibition (Davidson et al., 1986), yet the reproducibility of this effect has been questioned (Spray, Rozental, & Srinivas, 2002). Other possibilities include changes in the Cx phosphorylation status, which lead to a reduction in Cx expression (Goldberg et al., 1996; Guan, Wilson, Schlender, & Ruch, 1996).
